Sick certificates / MED3 / Fit note – New changes

The government has made changes to the self certificate information so here is a brief guide to help you:

From 10th December 2021, you only need to contact your GP surgery for a MED3 / Fit note / Sick note after 28 days of being away from work or school due to illness.

You do not need to provide your employer with proof of illness unless you have been unwell for more than 28 days.

After 28 days, (day 29 onwards) employees must provide their employer with a note from their GP, this is called a ‘Fit note’ or MED3 – to obtain one of these, you need to contact us from day 29 of sick leave via AskMyGP or phone us on day 29 (or the next working day) but not before. A clinician will assess you and provide a note if required.

For the first 28 days of illness, you can fill in a self certificate form – this form can be found in the services section of our website or on the government web page. We have also printed some copies which are available at reception if you are unable to print yourself.
