Dear Parent / Carer,
We are writing this post to let you know about the attached information leaflet regarding acute respiratory infections (ARI) in children under 5.
Who is this leaflet for?
This leaflet is for parents and carers of children aged under 5 years.
The Lincolnshire ICB has identified children under 5 as a priority group for assessment of acute respiratory infections (ARI).
This prioritisation does not apply to minor, self-limiting illnesses, such as short-lived coughs or colds.
What is the leaflet for?
The enclosed leaflet provides clear guidance to help you understand:
When to contact the GP surgery about respiratory symptoms
Which symptoms suggest an infection may not be self-limiting
How your child will be assessed
What to do if the surgery is closed
The aim is to ensure children who may be developing an acute respiratory infection are assessed promptly and safely.
Do I need to do anything?
No action is needed at this time.
The leaflet is for information only and should be used if your child develops respiratory symptoms that meet the criteria outlined.
Please keep the leaflet somewhere safe and refer to it if needed.
Assessment at the surgery
If you contact the surgery about ARI symptoms:
Children under 5 will be assessed on the same day
Assessment may be by phone or in person, however we will prioritise face-to-face assessment wherever possible
If the surgery is at full capacity, you may be directed to the next appropriate service, such as NHS 111, an urgent treatment centre (UTC), or A&E if required
Further information
Lincolnshire ICB will be providing further information in due course. In the meantime, the practice has provided this leaflet to help parents and carers access the right care at the right time.
If you have any questions, please contact the surgery.
Kind regards,
The Practice Team
